DOWER, John Crane, 1791?-1847 : BIRMINGHAM. London : Orr & Smith, [1836]. An attractive town plan of early Victorian Birmingham on a scale of some three-and-a-half inches to the mile. The coverage extends northwards to the top of New John Street, eastwards to include the Birmingham Vauxhall Gardens at Duddeston, south to Wellington Road, and west to Chad Road. The proposed line of the as yet unfinished London & Birmingham Railway is shown to the east, although not exactly along the final route adopted. Forty-two named buildings are identified in a keyed reference table and a vignette view of the Town Hall decorates the bottom left-hand corner. Originally drawn and engraved by Dower for Charles Partington’s “The British Cyclopaedia of Literature, History, Geography, Law, and Politics” (1836). SOLD |
