[PAYNE, Albert Henry, 1812-1902] : SALTERS’ HALL, ST. SWITHIN’S LANE.

[London : John Tallis & Co., 1852]. A pleasant small antique print – the graceful old hall in St. Swithin’s Lane built by Henry Carr between 1824 and 1827 but destroyed by fire in 1941. An engraving from the workshop of A. H. Payne, originally produced for Payne’s “Illustrated London, or a Series of Views in the British Metropolis and its Vicinity” (London : 1846-1847), and here in a slightly later impression dating from 1852.
Steel line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 67 x 86mm (approx. 2-5/8” x 3-3/8”). In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 207/102A.

London : Jones & Co., 1828. A pleasant antique print – the graceful old hall in St. Swithin’s Lane built by Henry Carr between 1824 and 1827 but destroyed by fire in 1941. Engraved by William Wallis (fl.1816-1855) from original studies (now in the Museum of London and the Guildhall Library) by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, the master recorder of nineteenth-century London. From Shepherd’s part-work series “Metropolitan Improvements; or London in the Nineteenth Century” (London : 1827-1830).
Steel line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 108 x 151mm (approx. 5-7/8” x 4-1/4”). In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 154/084.
