COLE, G. & ROPER, John : LIVERPOOL.

London : Vernor, Hood & Sharpe, 1807. A neatly worked and detailed town plan of Liverpool as it stood at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Engraved by John Roper (fl.1792-1810) from a draught by G. Cole – probably the surveyor George Cole of Soho. The map is decorated with the city’s coat of arms and a vignette view of St. Paul’s Church – the latter separately engraved by John Smith from an original study by George Sidney Shepherd (1784-1862). Originally produced to accompany the part-work “Beauties of England and Wales” (London : 1801-1818).
Copper line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 235 x 182mm (approx. 9-1/4” x 7-1/4”). Faint original fold, but overall in very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique map.

ANTIQUE MAP: A GEOLOGICAL AND TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP OF BOLTON AND ITS NEIGHBOURHOOD.

JACKSON, I. & BLACK, J. : A GEOLOGICAL AND TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP OF BOLTON AND ITS NEIGHBOURHOOD.

[London? : 1837]. An attractive and unusual map of the area, centred on Bolton, but extending westwards to include Horwich, north to Bradshaw and beyond, east to take in Bury, and south to Tyldesley, etc. Coloured to show the extent of the coal measures and outcrops, with mainly red rock conglomerate to the south and quatorze rocks predominating to the north. Compiled by Jackson and Black and lithographed by William Day and Louis Haghe of London for a so-far unidentified publication. Dated 1837 in pencil on verso.
Lithograph on paper, with original hand colour. Printed surface 199 x 331mm (approx. 7-7/8” x 9-1/8”). Old vertical folds; a couple of slight smudges to one margin, but overall in very good and clean state. Ownership stamp of the Carlisle Medical Library on verso.

[MOULE, Thomas, 1784-1851] : LANCASHIRE.

[London : George Virtue, 1833]. A fine antique map of the county, engraved in flamboyant gothic style and decorated with coats of arms, a vineleaf patterned border, a vignette of Nelson’s Monument in Liverpool, etc. Originally engraved in 1833 by William Schmollinger (1811?-1869) for Moule’s part-work series “The English Counties Delineated” (1830-1837) – and here in very early state, before the addition of railways, etc.
Steel line engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface 268 x 201mm (approx. 10-1/2” x 8”). A few faint spots and specks, but overall in very good and clean state. Rare in this early state and with original colour. A guaranteed genuine antique map.

ANTIQUE MAP: PLAN OF LIVERPOOL.

PALMER, Isaac : PLAN OF LIVERPOOL.

London : J. Stockdale, 1795. An interesting and attractive town plan of Liverpool as it stood in the late eighteenth century. Orientated with north to the left and executed on a scale of on a scale of some three-and-a-half inches to a thousand yards, the coverage extends from the jail between Great Howard Street and the Liverpool & Leeds Canal, down to Toxteth Park, and inland as far as the Quarry, the House of Correction and the Poor House at the top of Brownlow Hill Lane. Good detail is given of the old docks, including an intended new dock by the fort. Engraved by the Admiralty engraver Isaac Palmer (fl.1787-1805) of Store Street. Originally produced for John Aikin’s “A Description of the Country from Thirty to Forty Miles round Manchester” (London : 1795).
Copper line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 204 x 261mm (approx. 8” x 10-1/4”). Trimmed tight and just within neatline to eight-hand edge; a few minor marks, but overall in very good and clean condition. A guaranteed genuine antique map.

WALKER, J. & C. (WALKER, John, 1787-1873 & WALKER, Charles, 1799?-1872) : LANCASHIRE.

London : Longman, Orme, Rees & Co., [ca.1860]. A clearly engraved map of the county from the Admiralty engravers John & Charles Walker – on a scale of just over five miles to the inch, particular attention being given to the newly built railways. Originally published in 1835, but here in a later and updated version.
Line engraving on paper, with original hand colour. Engraved surface 396 x 324mm (approx. 15-1/2” x 12-3/4”). Folding into a contemporary glazed paper case with printed label; case a little rubbed, some light tanning, but overall in very good and clean condition for a fragile item. A guaranteed genuine antique map.
