[Paris : Denys Thierry, 1683]. A striking antique map offering a pleasant image of seventeenth-century Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight – from the French mathematician, engineer and surveyor Allain Manesson-Mallet. Originally produced for Mallet’s "Description de l'Univers : contenant les differents systemes du monde" (Paris : 1683).
Copper line engraving on paper. Engraved surface 147 x 105mm (approx. 5-3/4” x 4-1/8”). Text on verso. In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique map.

[London : George Virtue, 1834]. A fine antique map of the county, decorated with coats of arms, a patterned border, and a vignette view of Southampton. Originally engraved in 1834 by John Crane Dower (1791?-1847) for Moule’s part-work series “The English Counties Delineated” (London : 1830-1837) – and here in very early state, before the addition of railways, etc.
Steel line engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface 200 x 254mm (approx. 7-7/8” x 10”). Cropped tight to border at foot (as usual); a few slight marks and specks, but overall in very good and clean state. Rare in this early state and with original colour. An attractive map of the Portsmouth area, extending north to include Hambledon, east to beyond Bosham and the Witterings, west to Botley and Abshot, and south to take in Ryde and part of the coast of the Isle of Wight. Originally engraved in 1835 by John Crane Dower (1791?-1847) for Moule’s part-work series “The English Counties Delineated” (London : 1830-1837) – and here in very early state, before the addition of later detail.
Steel line engraving on paper. Original hand colour. Engraved surface 206 x 251mm (approx. 8-1/8” x 9-7/8”). A few tiny spots and specks, slight crease to upper margin, but overall in very good and clean state. Rare in this early state and with original colour. A guaranteed genuine antique map.
