[BLOME, Richard, 1635-1705] : CHEAPE WARD WITH ITS DIVISION INTO PARISHES, TAKEN FROM THE LAST SURVEY, WITH CORRECTIONS AND ADDITIONS. [London : for A. Churchill, J. Knapton & others, 1720]. A fine antique map of Cheap Ward in the City of London. Centred on Cheapside and the Poultry the map extends northwards to the Guildhall and includes the churches of St. Lawrence Jewry, St. Mildred Poultry and St. Mary le Bow (Bow Church), as well as Grocers’ Hall, King Street, Queen Street, Bucklersbury, Ironmonger Lane and Bow Lane. A numbered index adds the names of a dozen smaller courts and alleys. [BOWEN, Thomas, 1733?-1790] : CHEAP WARD WITH ITS DIVISIONS INTO PARISHES ACCORDING TO A NEW SURVEY. [London : Robert Baldwin], 1772. An attractive antique map of Cheap Ward in the City of London. Centred on Cheapside and the Poultry the map extends northwards to the Guildhall and includes the churches of St Lawrence Jewry, St Mildred Poultry and St Mary le Bow (Bow Church), as well as Grocers’ Hall, King Street, Queen Street, Bucklersbury, Ironmonger Lane and Bow Lane. The map is decorated with a rococo cartouche, the arms of the contemporary alderman (John Kirkman) and elevations of the Guildhall Chapel, Grocers’ Hall, Blackwell Hall and St Mildred. Originally produced for the London Magazine in 1769, the present (slightly revised) version of the map was utilised in John Noorthouck’s part-work "A new history of London including Westminster and Southwark" (London 1772-1773). Other maps in this series were engraved by Thomas Bowen (fl.1749-1790) and this would also appear to be his work. SOLD | |
