[BOWEN, Thomas, 1733?-1790] : BILLINGSGATE WARD AND BRIDGE WARD WITHIN, WITH THEIR DIVISIONS INTO PARISHES, ACCORDING TO A NEW SURVEY. [London : R. Baldwin, 1767]. An attractive eighteenth-century map of Billingsgate Ward and Bridge Ward in the City of London. From the northern end of London Bridge the map extends across (Lower) Thames Street and Eastcheap into Gracechurch Street – taking in the Monument, Billingsgate Market and Fishmongers’ Hall, the churches of St. Magnus the Martyr, St. Margaret Pattens, St. Mary at Hill and St. George, as well as Love Lane, Botolph Lane, Pudding Lane and Fish Street Hill. The map is decorated with a cartouche, elevations of St. Mary at Hill and St. Botolph, Botolph Lane, and the coats of arms of Aldermen William Beckford and William Stephenson. Originally produced for the “London Magazine” in March 1767. A delightful antique print of the old Billingsgate from the water, the river alive with small craft, the Monument and the spire of St. Magnus the Martyr on the skyline. An intricately engraved decorative border of fishing nets, barrels, lobsters and dolphins surrounds the image. Engraved by James Carter (1798-1855) from an original study by Frederick Calvert. CRAIG, William Marshall, 1764?-1829 : BILLINSGATE [sic] : MACKEREL. London : Richard Phillips, 1804. An attractive antique print – a woman hawker sets out from Billingsgate to cry her basket of mackerel through the streets. Mackerel were more plentiful between May and July than any other type of fish in London at this time and were even allowed to be sold on a Sunday, as long as they were landed before the commencement of divine service. Engraved from an original study by William Marshall Craig, water-colour painter to Queen Charlotte.
