With individual chapters on Wi lliam Hogarth, Richard Wilson, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Thomas Lawrence, J. M. W. Turner, David Wilkie, and William Dyce, but also many more general chapters – the animal painters, water-colour painters, miniaturists, book illustrators, portrait painters, landscape painters, the Pre-Raphaelites, etc., etc. Although omitting portions on the history of the Royal Academy and some technical descriptions of pictures which had appeared in the original 1866 edition, the present single volume edition adds considerable material on the artists who had died in the intervening years. “British art from Hogarth to Frank Holl ... Its chief charm is that it aims at and succeeds in giving an individual idea of each artist, touching upon some strong characteristic which brings the man as well as the painter to the mind’s eye” (Illustrated London News, 24th May 1890).
