[iv],346,[ii]pp. Original dark blue cloth, ruled and lettered on upper cover and spine in gilt, blocked in blind with the publisher’s device on lower cover; some faint rubbing; a few slight marks; some spotting, mainly of endpapers and edges, but still a very good copy. Inscribed E. A. Braid, Essex Fruiterers Library Department, on front pastedown, above a blank label with a single 1949 date-stamp.

Bristol : J. W. Arrowsmith, [1898]. First edition : the first issue, with just the thirty-two earlier titles listed in the advertisements for Arrowsmith’s 3/6 series. A sequel to “The Prisoner of Zenda” (1894) — Ruritania three years on. “Holds the reader in breathless attention throughout, so spirited, vigorous, and well written is the narrative” (The Graphic, 30th July 1898). Illustrated by Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) — he of the “Gibson Girl”.
Crown 8vo (20cm). 385,[iii]pp. Eight plates. Original blue-green cloth, ruled and lettered in gilt on upper cover and spine; just lightly rubbed and a touch bruised; endpapers a little tanned, but still overall a very good copy. Contemporary (April 1899) ownership inscription of Arthur Davies.

London : Skeffington & Son, [1918]. First British edition in book form. Captain Dieppe, man of mystery, soldier, adventurer, fugitive – and a woman who is not what she seems. A Prisoner of Zenda style romance, originally published as a special number of the “Illustrated London News” in 1899 and later a success on the stage in both London and New York.
Crown 8vo (20cm). 192 + 16pp inserted advertisements. Original green cloth, ruled on upper cover and blocked on lower cover in blind; ruled and lettered on spine in black; very lightly rubbed and a touch bruised; a few minor marks and signs of age, but a good copy. Contemporary inscription to Bill from his father dated 13th September 1918 on preliminary blank.
